1 of 8
Why is the sleep pattern of a baby adaptive?
Sleep during the day so parents can do chores that will ensure the baby's survival. Wake several times in the night because they have small stomachs and need regular feeding or they may starve in the night.
2 of 8

9-10 hours. Adult pattern of 25% REM and 75% non-REM. Uninterrupted - ideal sleep

Hormonal changes in teenagers may be due to delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS)
5 of 8

Sleep quality extremely poor. Sleep interrupted by illness. No stage 4 sleep. May have up to 1000 mini awakenings each night.
7 of 8
What issues are there with the way this research is carried out?
Done in sleep labs - low external validity. Students, infants and the elderly are studied far more than adults. A set pattern for each age group doesn't consider individual differences.
