What is a circadian rhythm?
A cycle once every 24 hours
1 of 14
What was Micheal siffre's aims, procedures and findings?
A: To find out long the sleep/wale cycle is without external influences. P: Spent time in caves around the world like in the southern alps where he resurfaced thinking it was 17 sept but it was actually the 20 august. F: circadian rhythm was 24-25hrs

Who's research supported Michael Siffre?
Aschoff and Wever

What did folkard et al do and find?
Experiement to see if ex. cues could override circadian rhythms. 12 people in a cave for 3 weeks. Went to bed when clock said 11:45pm+got up at 7:45am. Clock then sped up to 22hr day. Rhythms at first followed 22hr but reverted to 24hr

What is the best indicator of circadian rhythms?
Core body temperature
5 of 14
When is body temperature lowest and highest?
Lowest at 4:30am (36 degrees) Highest at 6pm (38 degrees)

When is there a 'trough' in body temperature?
Just after lunch, even if you havent eaten

When is cortisol highest and lowest?
Highest at 6am and lowest at 12 midnight
8 of 14
What hormones peak at midnight?
growth hormone and melatonin

Why is there said to be flaws in research in to circadian rhyt,ms sleep/wake cycle? What researcher said this?
Humans still had artificial light in the caves. Czeisler said you can change a persons sleep/wake cycle from 22-28hours using atrificial light
10 of 14
What are the two important individual differences in people relating to the sleep/wake cycle?
Length of cycle- can vary from 13-65hrs. People's rhythms peak at different times- (Duffy) Are you a morning person or late night person?
11 of 14
Who says that temperature is linked to lower cognitive ability?
Folkard. Children's recall was better when they were read to at 3pm rather than 9am
12 of 14
What were the bad things about Michael Siffres research?
Case study, individual differences

What did Gresbrecht find?
