What is Insomnia?
A sleep disorder which causes trouble to go to sleep or to stay alseep. It is diagnosed if the lack of sleep is affecting the person's everyday activities.

What is Hypersomnia?
A sleep disorder which causes people to sleep all the time. It can be caused by narcolepsy which is when someone has sudden attacks of sleep in the day.

Circadian Rhythm Disorders
Is a disorder of the sleep wake cycle

What is the Sleep Wake Cycle?
When someone is asleep at night and awake in the day over a regular 24 hour period

What is the Sleep Cycle?
A nightly pattern of 5 waves of the different sleep stages

What are parasomnias?
They occur when someone is asleep. Common types include: nightmares, sleep walking and sleep terrors.

Insomnias, Parasomnias and Narcolepsy

What treatments are used in sleep disorder clinics?
Blood testing - to test for genetic links for narcolepsy. Observation - Sufferer may spend a night in a clinic and researcher may watch individual to record any REM or watch for the amount of restlessness they exhibits.

What is the biological theory briefly?
Someone can be aggressive due to their biological makeup - they are naturally aggressive

What is the limbic system?
Set of brain structures that are in the middle of the brain. It is called the emotional area as it is responsible for emotions needed for survival.

People with emotional disorders tend to have damage to the limbic system. The limbic system is made up of many structures that are jointly responsible for: recognising, controlling and producing aggression

What is the amygdala?
A structure in the brain that recognises emotion and is responsible for aggression.

Explain more about the amygdala
In animal studies, if the amygdala is removed, the animal becomes more calm and does not respond to threat. Damage to the amygdala may cause an increase of aggression levels.
