often closed skills, when the performer decides when and how fast/slowly to carry out the skill, involving proactive performance. eg, taking a penalty kick in football

not affected by external factors; predominately habitual, set movements, self paced

open skills
affected by external factors, no clear beginning and end, externally paced

discrete skills
clear beginning and end. Skill can be repeated but performer starts again; single specific skill

continuous skill
no clear beginning/end, end of one cycle starts another, eg. cycling. no clear subroutines

externally paced skills
control over the rate is not held by the performer; often involves the reaction of the performer

high organisation skills
sub routines closely integrated and difficult to separate in practice; best practised as a whole

low organisation skills
sub routines tend to be discrete & may be practised separately and then integrated into the whole skill; can be learnt/practised using part method
