SIGNIFICANCE OF FOOD, WATER AND ENERGY, AND GLOBAL INEQUALITIES

?
Food - social well-being
- Inaccessibility of safe, nutritious food can cause malnourishment or undernourishment. - Malnourishment increases likelihood of getting diseases (1/3 of all under-5s globally die from diseases linked to malnourishment).
1 of 12
Food - economic well-being
-Lack of food can cause people to not perform as well at school, so they lack skills needed to help a country's economic development.-Malnourishment can prevent people from working, harming their personal economic well-being+country's economy.
2 of 12
Water - social well-being
- Clean, safe water is needed for drinking, cooking and washing. - Without proper sanitation, water sources get polluted by raw sewage. - Waterborne diseases (e.g. cholera+typhoid) kill many people each yr.
3 of 12
Water - economic well-being
- Having to walk long distances to fetch clean water can have economic impact on people+country's economy (less time spent working or going to school).-Water is needed to produce food, clothes and other products.
4 of 12
Energy - social well-being
- Country's need energy for industry, transport and in homes. - Way of life in HICs depends on having large, stable supply of energy.-No electricity=burn wood or kerosene=deforestation+fires likely.-Electricity powers pumps for wells=safe water.
5 of 12
Energy - economic well-being
- Electricity can allow industries to develop, creating jobs and making countries wealthier.
6 of 12
Global inequalities of resources - availablity
- Global distribution of resources=very uneven.-Some countries dont have own energy reserves. - Others have dry climates or environments not suitable for food production.
7 of 12
Global inequalities of resources - how can country's with a lack of availability cope?
-To access more resources, some countries have to import them or find technological situations to produce more (e.g. build desalination plants to produce fresh water from saltwater - expensive).
8 of 12
Global inequalities of resources - what does consumption of resources depend on?
- A country's wealth and their availability of resources.
9 of 12
Global inequalities of resources - in HICs
- Consumption of resources is greater in more developed HICs. - They can afford to but to resources they need and expect a higher standard of living.
10 of 12
Global inequalities of resources - in NEEs
- Consumption is increasing rapidly in NEEs (e.g. China). - Industry is developing very fast (which requires a lot of energy) and pop. and wealth are also increasing rapidly.
11 of 12
Global inequalities of resources - in LICs
- Consumption is lower in LICs because they either cant afford to exploit the resources that they have, or to import the resources if they're lacking their own.
