the average time is 20-30 seconds, Peterson and Peterson concluded that it can be affected by factors affecting accessibility and availability

How is information encoded in the short-term memory?
The information collected is changed into a code/process in which the memory can handle, it is done acoustically or visually. For example, people see an object as 3d but it is changed into a 2d format.

Memory can be decayed if attention is not given to it. It can be also displaced when new information comes in through the sensory memory
