Elizabethans and Jacobeans beleived in the 'divine right of kings'. This means the king rules directly from God so a crime against the king is a crime against God.

Shakespeare satged his plays at the Globe theatre in Southwark, South London which was built in 1598. The Globe seated 1500 people but in the 16th century they would squeeze in twice as many. The stage was a semi circle.
