Darwin - he wanted to see why disadvantageous characteristics were seen as attractive

What are subdivisions of the theory + what do they mean?
Intrasexual- members of the same sex compete for members of the opposite sex.Intersexual selection -1sex indicates the areas in which other sex has to compete in-involves preference of 1 sex for memberof opposite who posses certain qualities

Which animal is mainly used to explain sexual selection + why?
Peacock - males have long tails , this is a disadvantage because it means they are more likely to be caught - but this is seen as attractive by females because this means that those with long tails are strong + able to survive predators.

1. ST mating strategy used by men - same time can impregnate more women + more offspring than if women slept with same no. of men

LT mating strategies- women more choosy due to obligatory biological role, a poor choice of mate means a disastrous waste of resources.

Man who: invests resources in her +child , physically protect, shows promise as good parent, sufficiently compatible to ensure minimal cost to her + child. ==> men dont give resources away,they're attracted to young women (fertile)

Problem with this theory
Takes evolutionary approach- which means it ignores other biological approaches. Also fairly gender bias- men couldn't have developed desire for a variety of partners + casual sex without willing females
