Old Testament on sex
No one particular view. God created for reproduction. Adultery forbidden. Women should be virgins on marriage. Accounts of incest: two daughters with father in Lot (Genesis 19)

Left issues open, 'Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her' (Mark 10:11), talks of equality between men and women.

St. Paul on sex
No point in giving detailed ethic as this life is temporal. Move away from the body, towards the spiritual. Sex kept within marriage, body should be respected.

Augustine on sex
Necessary for procreation; a necessary evil. Restricted to marriage. Dangerous as devil uses women to lead men away from reason - The Fall - constant reminder of man's sin. Chastity ideal, sex allowed if not enjoyed and within marriage.

Aquinas on sex
Based on Natural Law and Aristotle. For telos achieved need good acts to develop human nature. Purpose of sex is reproduction, within marriage only. No to masturbation, **********, homo, incest, **** and adultery.

Kant on sex
C.I. - Sex allowed if serving more valuable goals (e.g. marriage). Cannot treat people as means to an end. Marriage = contract which 2 people grant reciprocal rights; sex is the union. Some forms of prostitution allowed if fully agreed by both.

Utilitarianism on sex
Value of pleasure, shared pleasure adds value to relationship, greatest happiness for greatest number. Sex is important for a happy society. Consent needed, consequences (e.g. HIV) must be considered. Emotions considered. Harm principle.

Virtue on sex
Individual. Giving one's self to intimacy, a relationship and commitment is virtuous. Hursthouse: follow a virtuous persons example. Slote: care = intimate, humanitarian & self. Balance between sexuality and relationships.

Modern views on sex
Psychology and sociology. Freud: each person's approach is to do with upbringing and relationship with parents. Need to control pursuit of sexual pleasure. Super-ego reminds us of social norms. Morality may not accord with human nature.

Christians on sex
Based on Bible, Augustine & Aquinas. Marriage is fidelity, union and procreation. Pleasure is a gift from God. J. Dominion: sex is meaningful and powerful so must only be allowed in continuous, enduring relationships.

Christians on homosexuality
Divided: Bible = wrong; spirit of NT = its the quality of relationship that matters. Concept of pure form of men and women: prohibited men from shaving, cross-dressing and homo (only last still considered). Catholics: OK to be homo if not acted on.

Catholics = no, 'rhythm method' allowed, 1997 Vatican Prov. Council stated 'intrinsic evil'. Protestants allow within marriage under 'prudent family planning'. Only abstinence outside of marriage.
