women were expected to be virgins at the time of marriage, A man was entitled to write his wife a notice of divorce and send her away but women did not have the same right

Jesus didn't specifically address sexual issues, In mark 10 he says that a man should not divorce his wife but in Mark 5 he says that adultery may be legitimate grounds to do so. He is introducing greater equality

the body is the “temple of the body” so should not be given to fornication and sinfulness He said wifes should be subject to their husbands but both should give their bodies to one another in sex

What do churches and liberal societies say about pre-marital sex?
Traditonal churches say sex should be reserved for marriage when a couple has their relationship sanctified by God, however in a liberal society pre-marital sex is accepted and widespread

“try before you buy”, get to see if you are compatible, obtain trust, flexibility, good for people who dont believe in marriage, no performance pressure

If they break up the person knows their vulnerablitities, more abortions, more STD's, unwanted pregnancies, single parents

How do churches traditionally view pre-marital sex?
sex outside of marriage is a sin and sex outside of marriage shows a lack of discipline and brings about concerns for the institutions of marriage

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24)

It is the inablity to make a long term commitment and it is an offence against marriage

Catholic church forbids divorce after marriage has been consumated but the NT allows divorce and remmariage in cases of adultury

goes against natural order God intended, and the CC believes that it is immoral as it doesnt lead to pro creation, a homosexual person should gain in self restraint and avoid sexual activity

“Men..gave up natural relations with women” Romans 1:27- suggests homosexuality is the result of the fall “Do not be decieved neither the immoral...nor sexual perverts...will inherit the kingdom of God”

Natural law cannot condone extramarital relationships as these undermine Divine, Natural and Human laws. Pre-marital may be acceptable if the intention is to fufill primary precepts

Utilitarians don't share Christian values of marriage so it is up to the couple to decide, marriage may be better as it offers better protection of rights but cohabitation may be better as there is more flexibility and openness

they do not see it as intrinsically wrong, it is up to the couple to decide. However a rule utilitarian would argue that Monogamy brings about greater satisfaction meaning we can introduce a rule which prohibits adultery

it is okay if both partners consent and avoid harm, the rejection of homosexuality is based on irrational homophobic prejudice, satisfying different preferences does not cause society to collapse,a society which encourages different lifestyles=useful

by the greatest number principle homosexuality may not be acceptable if there is a large amount of people morally outraged by it.

What does situation ethics say about premarital sex?
challenges the sacredness which is sometimes given to sex. Premarital sex is a means of exploring ones sexuality and this is not treating a person as a means to an end but treating a person with mutual respect which cannot be wrong

may be acceptable in some circumstances if it brings about the most loving consequence, it has to be based on the four principles of pragmatism, relativism, positivism and personalism

The bible does condemn homosexual practices but not relationships as there main concern was to distance themselves from non-Jewish and non-Pagan traditions
