HideShow resource information
what is meant by gamma radiation and why cannot it be identified from the information given?
A high energy electromagnetic wave. does not effect proton or mass number
1 of 16
why does sodium chloride have a different structure to caesium chloride?
Cs+ is a larger ion than Na+ and can have a larger coordination number
2 of 16
Describe structure and bonding in graphite
Layers of hexagonal rings of carbon atoms. Each of its atoms are covalently bonded to three other carbon atoms. There are weak van der Waals forces between the layers which alow them to slide over each other. The fourth carbon atom is delocalised.
3 of 16
what is meant by electron deficient?
outter shell not full
4 of 16
Define dynamic equilibrium
When the foreward and reverse reaction occur at the same rate
5 of 16
define acid
proton donor
6 of 16
define covalent bond
has a pair of shared electrons, one from each atom
7 of 16
define coordinate bone?
shared pair of electrons, both electrons comming from the same atom
8 of 16
what is bond polarity and how does it arise?
unequal electron distribution as one atom has a higher electronegativity
9 of 16
define molar first ionisation energy?
the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous ions
10 of 16
what is relative isotipic mass?
mass of an atom of an isotope compared with 1/ 12th the mass of one atom of carbon 12
11 of 16
name one isotope and describe how it is used?
colbalt-60 used in radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer
12 of 16
how is an atom ionised?
bombarded by high energy electrons and an electron is knocked out of the atom
13 of 16
what do you need to find the molecular formula?
relative molecular mass
14 of 16
define beta emmision
high energy electron emmited from the nucleus
15 of 16
define half life
time taken for half of the atoms in a radioisotope to decay
