What are the 3 different types of neurone?
Sensory neurones, motor neurones, relay neurones.
1 of 15
What do sensory neurones do?
Carry the action potential from a sensory receptor to the central nervous system (CNS).
2 of 15
What do motor neurones do?
Carry an action potential from the CNS to an effector such as a muscle or gland.
3 of 15
What do relay neurones do?
Connect sensory and motor neurones.
4 of 15
What is the function of the neurone?
To transmit the action potential from one part of the body to another.
5 of 15
How does the length of a neurone help it?
Many are long to transmit the action potential over a long distance.
6 of 15
What does the cell surface membrane have a lot of and what do these control?
Many gated ion channels that control the entry or exit of sodium, potassium or calcium ions.
7 of 15
What pumps do they have and what is the function of these pumps?
Sodium-potassium ion pumps. These use ATP to actively transport 3Na+ out of the cell and 2K+ into the cell.
8 of 15
What do neurones maintain across their cell surface membrane?
Maintain a potential difference.
9 of 15
What are neurones surrounded by and what is the purpose of these cells?
Surrounded by a myelin sheath (Schwann cells) that insulates the neurone from electrical activity.
10 of 15
What are the gaps between the Schwann cells called?
Nodes of Ranvier.
11 of 15
What does their cell body contain?
A nucleus, mitochondria and ribosomes.
12 of 15
Where is the cell body in the motor neurone and describe their axon
Cell body is in the central nervous system. Long axon that carries action potential to effector.
13 of 15
Where is the cell body in a sensory receptor and describe the axon
Cell body just outside the central nervous system. Short axon carrying action potential into CNS.
14 of 15
What do both sensory and motor neurones have connected to other neurones?
Dendrites. Sensory neurones have a long dendron which carries action potential from sensory receptor to the cell body.
