Section A – Question 1
I was an actor playing the role of Mindi, with paranoia disorder aged 16 in my theatre in Education piece the “Asylum”. The ‘Asylum’ was about how people living in an asylum are treated and stereotypical way of how people got treated

we showed this by switching back and forth on the different views. As it was a theatre in education piece we wanted to teach the audience that living in an asylum with a medical condition is like they expect it.

We performed out piece based on Artaud’s interpretations of theatre of cruelty. The genre of our piece was dramatic horror. Our performance was set on 11th February in 1946,

We performed the “Asylum” to GCSE students as we thought it was the most appropriate age as there are some violent scenes.

We performed on a proscenium arch stage in our school theatre so we could break the fourth wall and interact with the audience whilst informing them about what our lives are like whilst suffering with a medical condition.

Throughout our piece we used white lighting to make it clear for the audience that it was just a normal day for us living in an asylum. However, there was a flicker of red light occasionally to show something strange or terrible is going to happen.

Each character wore a hospital gown which made it clear where we set our performance and the state we were in.
