What is Sea Level?
The boundary between land and sea. The level to which the sea reaches and defines the coastline
1 of 17
What is Isostatic Change?
When the land rises or falls relative to the sea
2 of 17
What is Eustatic Change?
When the sea level itself rises or falls
3 of 17
On what Scale is Isostatic change?
Local Scale
4 of 17
On what scale is Eustatic Change
Global Scale
5 of 17
What is Isostatic Subsidence?
The sinking of the Land
6 of 17
How may Eustatic change occur?
During cold glacial periods, precipitation falls as snow forming huge ice sheets that store water that's usually held in oceans, causing sea levels to fall, as temperatures rise, it melts and returns to the sea causing sea level to rise
7 of 17
How may Isostatic change occur?
During glacial periods, enormous weight of ice sheets causes isostatic subsidence, as the ice begins to melt the land starts rising again- Isostatic Recovery
8 of 17
What risks does Isostatic change pose?
If the land sinks=Eustatic change, sea levels will rise , increasing the risk of flooding
9 of 17
What is a feature of Emergent coasts?
Raised Beaches
10 of 17
Why do raised beaches occur?
Due to Isostatic recovery
11 of 17
What evidence is there for Isostatic recovery?
Raised beaches, wave cut notches and platforms at cliffs
12 of 17
What are features of Submergent Coasts?
Rias and Fjords
13 of 17
What are Rias?
Flooded valleys due to Eustatic change
14 of 17
What are Fjords?
Flooded deep glacial troughs, Long steep-sided with a U-shaped cross section
15 of 17
What are Dalmation Coasts?
Submergent coastlines that form in a landscape of ridges and valleys running parallel to the coast, sea levels rise and valleys flood, top of the ridges remain exposed forming islands
16 of 17
What is Sea level rise primarily the result of?
Thermal expansion and melting of freshwater ice e.g. Greenland and Antarctic Ice sheets
