?
What is the difference between breathing and Respiration?
Breathing is taking in air and expelling it from our lungs, whereas repiration is the release of energy from glucose into our muscles.

Defenition of Respiration
The release of energy from glucose into our muscles
3 of 13
Equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen --> energy + water + carbon dioxide
4 of 13
how much oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen in inhaled air?
Oxygen=21%, Carbon dioxide=0.04%, Nitrogen=79%
5 of 13
how much oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen in exhaled air?
Oxygen=16%, Carbon dioxide=4%, Nitrogen=79%
6 of 13
What happens in the gas exchange
Oxygen passes through the capillary wall and into the tissues; carbon dioxide passes from the tissues into the blood.
7 of 13
Adaptions of the alveoli
they give the lungs a really big surface area, they have moist, thin walls (just one cell thick), they have a lot of tiny blood vessels called capillaries

What is emphysema?
emphyseama is a condition where the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged, causing breathlessness
10 of 13
Effects of tar
Can cause cancer in the lungs mouth and throat, coats inside of lungs and make gas exchange difficult
11 of 13
Effects of carbon monoxide
it takes the place of oxygen in the red blood cells, cause heart disease because heart has to work harder
12 of 13
Effects of nicotine
leaads to heart disease because it is addictive and makes smokers want more cigarretts
