nnnHow does the eye work?
1.Light rays go through the pupil a hole at the front of the eye 2.A tiny upside-down image forms on the retina The retina changes light energy into electrical signals 3.The signals travel along a nerve and your brain turns the image the right way up

What can be used to make coloured light?
Filters

what is white light made up of?
White light is made up of 7 different colours and when these colours are refracted by different amounts they spread out. These colours are called a spectrum.
3 of 13
What is dispersion?
The separating of the colours in a white light.
4 of 13
Name some objects that could be used to split up the colours in a white light?
A prism is normally used to split up white light. However, lenses are also used to split up the colours in white light.
5 of 13
How is coloured light made?
When a white light passes through a filter some of the colours are absorbed. Eg. a red filter only allows red light to be transmitted the rest are absorbed.
6 of 13
Why do objects look coloured?
Because not all objects reflect all the colours in white light. White objects reflect all the colours, a red object reflects red light bu absorbs the rest . This applies to all the colours except black, black absorbs all colours.

What happens to light when it hits a surface?
It is reflected
8 of 13
What do rough surfaces do to light rays?
They scatter the rays so a reflection cannot be seen.
9 of 13
What do smooth surfaces do to light?
They reflect light more evenly. A plane mirror (flat mirror) reflects light very evenly we can see a reflection in the mirror.
10 of 13
What happens to light when it hits something transparent?
It changes speed and direction. This is called refraction.
11 of 13
What happens when refraction takes place?
Refraction takes place at the interface of two substances. When light is transmitted through the glass it slows down and changes direction towards the normal. When it travels back out it speeds up again and changes direction away from the normal.

WHat are lenses for?
they're curved pieces of transparent glass or plastic that refract light in particular ways. Some lenses make the light spread out whilst others bring them closer together.
