What is the equation for calculating moment?
Moment = Force x Distance
1 of 51
What is the unit for moment?
Nm (newton meters) or Ncm (newton centimetres)
2 of 51
What are the three classes of levers?
Class 1: RFE Class 2: FRE Class 3: REF
3 of 51
What does the R, E and F stand for with regards to levers?
R= Resistance (or load) E= Effort: F= Fulcrum
4 of 51
What is moment?
The turning effect of a force around a pivot.
5 of 51
Where is the distance measured from on a lever, to calculate moment?
From the effort/force to the fulcrum/pivot.
6 of 51
What are the substances that react together, in a reaction, called?
Reactants
7 of 51
What are the substances that are formed, in a reaction, called?
Products
8 of 51
What name is given to the force that holds atoms together in a compound?
Chemical Bond
9 of 51
What is the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reaction?
Endothermic reactions take heat in, whilst exothermic reactions give out heat.
10 of 51
How many atoms are destroyed or gained in a chemical reaction?
None; the mass is conserved in a chemical reaction.
11 of 51
What is a base?
A substance that reacts with an acid to neutralise it and produce a salt.
12 of 51
How can the rate of reaction be changed?
Temperature, surface area, concentration, volume/pressure and use of a catalyst.
13 of 51
What happens when a catalyst is added to a reaction?
The catalyst does not react with the substances, but speeds the reaction rate up by increasing the surface area of the reactants.
14 of 51
Finish the word equation: Acid + Base = ?
Acid + Base = Salt + Water
15 of 51
What is a placebo?
A fake drug given to people in tests to compare the results/effects/differences of the real drug.
16 of 51
What is a blind trial?
When the patient isn't aware if they've been given the real drug or the placebo.
17 of 51
What is a double blind trial?
When both the doctor and the patient aren't aware if the drug is real or a placebo.
18 of 51
What is an independent variable?
'Change'
19 of 51
What is a dependant variable?
'Measure'
20 of 51
What is an control variable?
'Keep the same'
21 of 51
How can you calculate speed?
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
22 of 51
How do you calculate pressure?
Pressure = Force ÷ Area
23 of 51
What is the unit for pressure?
N/cm² or N/m²
24 of 51
If a substance is neutral, what colour will the universal indicator turn?
It will remain green, approx. pH7
25 of 51
What pH level, approximately, is a deep red colour?
pH 1 (Very acidic)
26 of 51
What pH level, approximately is a deep purple colour?
pH 14 (Very strong alkaline)
27 of 51
How do you calculate density?
Density (g/cm3) = Mass ÷ Volume
28 of 51
Why does an egg get sucked into a bottle with a lit splint inside?
The lit splint gives energy to the gas particles inside the bottle. As they gain energy, they move faster and hit the sides of the bottle creating pressure. When the pressure gets high, the egg is sucked into the bottle.
29 of 51
What is the gullet/oesophagus?
A muscular tube that takes food from your mouth to your stomach
30 of 51
What is the liver's function?
To produce bile that neutralises stomach acids and breaks up oil droplets
31 of 51
What is the function of the pancreas?
The pancreas is leaf shaped, and makes enzymes.
32 of 51
What is the gall bladder?
The gall bladder stores bile made in the liver.
33 of 51
How can we identify if a word is an enzyme?
It has the 'ase' ending (e.g protease)
34 of 51
What do protease break down?
Protease break down proteans
35 of 51
What do lipase break down?
Lipase break down fats
36 of 51
What is amino acid?
A product of protein digestion.
37 of 51
What are glycerol and fatty acids?
Both are products of fat digestion.
38 of 51
What do carbohydrase break down?
Carbohydrase break down carbohydrates.
39 of 51
What are carbohydrates needed for?
Energy
40 of 51
What are proteins needed for?
Growth and repair
41 of 51
What is fibre needed for?
Prevents constipation and cleans bowels.
42 of 51
Why are minerals needed?
Making red blood cells & healthy bones and teeth
43 of 51
Why are vitamins needed?
For strong bones and teeth & healthy skin and gums

Energy and warmth
45 of 51
Why is water needed?
Keep bodily fluids hydrated
46 of 51
What effects can smoking have on your body?
Tar can build up in your lungs, causing breathing problems. Smoking can also cause cancer.
47 of 51
What are the ossicles?
Made up of three small bones (the anvil, hammer and stirrup), the ossicles carry the vibrations made by the eardrum and amplify them.
48 of 51
What is the pinna?
The pinna funnels sound waves into the ear.
49 of 51
What is the auditory canal?
The canal that sends sound waves to the ear drum.
