1 of 19
What is a solute?
A solute is a substance that is being dissolved.
2 of 19
What is a solvent?
A solvent is the liquid that the substance is dissolving into.
3 of 19
What do paints contain?
Paints contain A solvent Binding medium and a pigment.
4 of 19
In a paint what does the solvent do?
A solvent thins the paint.
5 of 19
Whats the first stage of the evolution of the atmosphere?
Volcanoes let out steam and CO2, the water vapour condensed to make the oceans.
6 of 19
What happens in stage 2?
Green palnts evolved to make oxygen, they removed CO2 and produced oxygen. N2 was created by ammonia reacting with the O2 and released by denitrafying bacteria.
7 of 19
What happens in stage 3?
The creation of the ozone layer allowed the evolution of complex animals. The build up of oxygen killed the early organisms. Oxygen created the ozone layer which blocked harmful rays from the sun.
8 of 19
What is a molecule?
Atoms that have joined together.
9 of 19
What is a compound?
A substance made out of different types of atom.
10 of 19
What are the two types of bonding?
Ionic and covalent.
11 of 19
Explain ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding is when an atom gives away or gains an electron making a full outer shell.
12 of 19
Explain covelant bonding.
Covelant bonding is when an atom shares and electron with another atom making a full outer shell.
13 of 19
What is the difference between complete combustion and incomplete combustion.
Incomplete combustion creates carbon monoxide, where as complete combustion does not.
14 of 19
What are the 3 key processes in the carbon cycle?
Photosynthesis, respiration and combustion.
15 of 19
what are polymers named after?
The monomers that make them.
16 of 19
What are alkanes and alkenes?
Hydro carbons
17 of 19
What are the first 4 alkanes?
methane ethane propane and butane.
