Science - 7F - Acid and Alkalinity

?
What are common symbols for a hazard sign?
environmentally damaging, corrosive, explosive, toxic, flammable etc.
1 of 11
What are acids?
A substance that turns litmus red. It has a pH of less
than 7.
2 of 11
What are alkali's?
A substance that turns litmus blue. It has a pH of more than 7.
3 of 11
What is the universal indicator and what does it do?
A universal indicator is a pH indicator made of a solution of several compounds that exhibits several smooth colour changes over a wide range pH values to indicate the acidity or alkalinity of solutions.
4 of 11
What is the pH scale?
The pH scale is what we measure the indicators to. it has a 1-14 scale, red - purple. All neutral solutions have the colour green, acidic is red to yellow-green and alkaline is blue-green to purple.
5 of 11
What is neutralisation?
neutralisation is when you mix acid and alkaline together, or acid and base. they act on each other and become equal/neutralised. on a pH scale, a neutralised substance would become green
6 of 11
What is a word equation?
A word equation represents a chemical reaction using the names of the substances involved. Word equations do not show any chemical symbols or formulae.
7 of 11
Define risk
risk is the chance of a hazard that can cause harm.
8 of 11
What are reactants?
Reactants are the substances you start with and are written on the left side of the word
equation.
9 of 11
What are products?
Products are the new substances that are made and are written on the right side of the word
equation.
10 of 11
How are salts made in acids and alkalis?
Salts are made when an acid reacts with an alkali or a base.
