What are the symptoms of schizophrenia required for diagnosis?
Delusions, hallucinations, flat affect, disorganised speech, catatonic behaviour for at least 6 months or longer

Social/occupational dysfunction, and symptoms must a occur for a duration of 6 months (includes 1 month of symptoms that meet criteria A and may include residual symptoms

What categories for classifying schizophernia?
Disorganised, Catatonic, Paranoid, Undifferentiated, Residual.

What characteristics are linked to the disorganised subtype?
Disoraganised speech/behaviour, flat affect, social withdrawal, loss of interest in everyday life.

What characteristics are linked to the cataonic subtype?
excessive motor activity i.e. grimacing or fixed, rigid posture for hours on end

What are the characteristics of the paranoid subtype?
Preoccupied with one or more delusions or frequent auditory hallucinations. (NO: disorganised speech, catatonic behaviour, cognitive and emotional responses not affected.

What are the characteristics linked to the undifferentiated subtype?
It includes other symptoms from the other subtypes but does not fit in one subtype conclusively.

What are the charcateristic linked to the Residual subtype?
No delusions, hallucinations disorganised speech/behaviour but continued evidence of disturbance

What are postive symptoms?
Realeted to gaining of symptoms i.e. hallucinations, delusions, thought and speech disturbances, diorganised or catonic behaviour.

A belief that does not match reality

Define Hallucination
Perceptions that occur without stimuli from the external world. They are usually audiotory i.e. voices

What are negative symptoms?
Symptoms include absence, loss or deficit of cognitive, emotional, social and general life functions

What are the two types of schizophrenia?
Type 1:Episodic mainly positive symptoms i.e.hallucinations, they occur in episodes with periods of relative normality. Type 2: Chronic, mainly negative symptoms i.e. flatten effect, it normally has evidence of a steady decline over time
