Schizophrenia- Non-biological Explanations

?
Overall, what do the cognitive explanations suggest about Sz?
Small underlying problems in memory, perception and attention, they suggest Sz patients confuse self-generated experiences (thought and imagination) with information coming through the senses
1 of 10
Firth's Attention Deficit Theory
Sz is caused by faulty attention system, we have preconscious thought to filter info from senses, Sz dont filter things effectively and get sensory overloads, this accounts for hallucinations, disorganised speech and delusions
2 of 10
Hemsleys Schema Theory
Agrees with Firths theory, however it adds that there is a breakdown in memory & perception relationship, schemas cant be activated in new situations, they experience sensory overload, dont know what bits of situation to ignore/ focus on
3 of 10
Both biological and cognitive explanations are complementary, what research is there to suggest this? (supporting research)
Firth found cognitive defects are linked with certain areas of the brain that use dopamine, found Sz have a reduced blood flow to these areas when given cognitive tasks, supporting both cognitive and biological explanations
4 of 10
Conflicting Evidence
HM had brain damage and suffered from faulty cognitions but didn't show any Sz symptoms
5 of 10
Other Explanations
Doesn't take into account other factors like poverty or life events
6 of 10
Usefulness
Offers up different therapies to treat Sz and help patients recognise their own faulty cognitions and learn to cope with them
7 of 10
Testability
Correlational research so it can not establish cause and effect relationship
8 of 10
Psychology as a science
Lots of objective scientific research into this which can be replicated
9 of 10
Name a few weaknesses not previously mentioned
Doesn't account for negative symptoms, it isnt a complete explanation as it doesn't explain where it comes from
