Schizophrenia causes

?
What are the biological explanations for schizophrenia?
dopamine hypothesis and genetic inheritance
1 of 11
What does the dopamine hypothesis state?
excess dopamine causes it. development on receptors in 1 area inhibits them in another. centres on the hypersensitivity of D2 receptors- likely to over react
2 of 11
what did Randrup and munched do?
they injected rats with amphetamines. the rats become more isolated and aggressive. they found by changing the dopamine levels it made them produce psychotic behaviour
3 of 11
What did lieberman find?
found that 75% of patients w/ schizophrenia show new symptoms when taking drugs like amphetamines- only few people who take it suffer from psychotic symptoms.
4 of 11
positives of this theory
scientific. schizophrenics are more sensitive to dopamine reuptake. animals tested- lots of data
5 of 11
negatives of this theory
evidence of this is gathered by scans of when people are dead- long time to wait. reductionist. schizophrenia is rare and therefore difficult to test brains and monitor changes.
6 of 11
what does the genetic inheritance theory say?
that schizophrenia is passed down from one generation to the next. 1st degree relative- 6-17% and twin 50%. specific genes have not been shown to directly cause it but 700 genes associated with it
7 of 11
What did Gottesman and Shields do?
conducted inv if schizo caused genetically by comparing concordance rates of MZ and DZ twins
8 of 11
what did they find?
MZ both diagnosed with= 42% and DZ= 9%. diathesis stress model- genetic predisposition plus environment trigger. people will have lower threshold for stress- so schizo will be triggered
9 of 11
What did Tienari do?
study on 155 schizophrenic mums who put child up for adoption and a control group who are adopted with bio mum who is not schizophrenic.
10 of 11
what did they find?
children with schizophrenic mum has 10.3% chance and Control Group- 1.1%
