teach people how to develop and apply coping strategies and reduce symptoms - works via education, targeting a specific symptom and applying a therapy via homework. they will develop 2 strategies per symptom

EVAL OF CSE
- ideal for long term treatment as people are able to apply it to real life - when tested it showed a significant alleviation in positive symptoms

- studied the effectiveness of the therapy - significantly reduce the severity of symptoms - suggesting the effectiveness of CBT in the reduction of symptoms

Tarkington
- similar results and assessed current practices and data on CBT and found it was highly effective - suggests this should be used as a mainstream treatment

EVALUATION OF CBT
- Studies have shown that CBT is the best treatment with the use of antipsychotic drugs - training for therapists = essential - ashiz is a huge disorder, effects every one differently, isnt ideal for everyone - develop coping methods

BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY - TOKEN ECONOMY
- schiz = maladaptive, can be learnt - using reinforcements to get the desired behaviour, normaly used for long term institution, good to help reduce negative symptoms e.g. low motivation

Reviewed token economy regimes over 15 years and found negative symptoms where reduced - suggests the therapy is effective

- unclear if the behaviours were maintained - longitudical - high drop out rates

- male schiz - for 6 months - those who show initiative and co operated with staff benifited most - suggests it is effective but not for everyone in many cases it was not effective

EVALUATION OF TOKEN ECONOMY
- if tokens are removed the behaviours do not continue, only treats the symptoms not the cause - other factors, the nurses percieve that they are making the change and are therefor more motivated to help improve patients - Gender bias, only males

OVERALL EVALUATION
- reductionist - ignore biological such as genetic link - app - effective treatment plan - combination treatments - takes into account individual differences treatments are tailored to the patients
