Large orchestra, made up of strings, woodwind, brass & percussion. (Piccolo, cor anglais, tam-tam, contrabasso. Instrumentation varies throughout creating contrasts in timbre. Unusual effects use (e.g. cymbal being played with mallet and cello bow).

Atonal. A lot of dissonant harmony. Chord and melodies often built from hexachords

Made of many short, fragmented motifs combined in different ways. Melodies very disjunct. Piece uses octave displacement. Motifs varied by things like inversion and rhythmic augmentation

Largely contrapuntal, with occasional monophonic and homophonic moments. Complex textures built up by things like imitation and inversion (e.g. final climax created from 3 different canons at same time)
