What are schemas?
organised patterns of knowledge about a particular aspect of the world, contains 2 concepts scripts - basic sequences of events & frames - package of knowledge about objects.
1 of 8
What are the processing benefits of schemas?
Reduces storage capacity, leads to fast & efficient processing

Describe Bartletts (1932) War of The Ghost study
He looked at how much participants could remember from a story and found that they would fill in gaps with what they expect to happen, we have a schema we fit details into, the recall errors were more conventional to UK based culture.

Evaluate the schema theory
Strengths: emphasizes role of top-down processes, demonstrates how we store info in LTM in a meaning related way. Weaknesses: vague, doesn'Wht explain how info that doesn't fit into a schema & over-exaggerates how error-prone we are.

What are the hierarchical semantic networks & the 3 levels of categories?
Superordinate, Basic, Subordinate
5 of 8
What is the frequency effect?
Recognition times are faster for things seen more frequently
6 of 8
What is meant by associative semantic networks?
Adapted from Collins & Loftus (1975), info is represented as nodes in a network, each node relates to a different concept, the shorter the link the stronger the association.
7 of 8
What is concept of inhibition?
We don't want too much activation as this could lead to hyper vigilance, we need to inhibit irrelevant info.
