BOTARD: It's all a lot of made up nonsense.
But I saw it, I saw the rhinoceros!

PAPILLON: 'Yesterday, just before lunch time, in the church square of our town, a cat was trampled to death by a pachyderm.'
It wasn't exactly in the church square.
2 of 40
BOTARD: Does it concern a male cat or a female? What breed was it? And what colour?
You're obscuring the issue; it's simply a question of a cat being run over by a pachyderm - in this case, a rhinoceros.
3 of 40
PAPILLON: Let us try and get things clear. Did you yourself, with your own eyes, see a rhinoceros strolling through the streets of town?
It didn't stroll, it ran.
4 of 40
BOTARD: ...Forgive me for laughing! Ha ha ha!
But I saw it, I saw the rhinoceros. I'd take my oath on it.
5 of 40
BOTARD: Get away with you! And I thought you were a sensible girl!
Mr Botard, I can see straight! And I wasn't the only one; there were plenty of other people watching.
6 of 40
BOTARD: I work on Sundays as well (to Daisy) In any case, do you know what a rhinoceros looks like?
It's a...it's a very big ugly animal.
7 of 40
BOTARD: I campaign against ignorance wherever I find it...
Hurry up, Mr Berenger.
8 of 40
BOTARD: ...in palace or humble hut!
(to Berenger) Quick! Sign the time sheet!
9 of 40
BERENGER: Oh thank you! Has the Boss arrived?
(a finger to her lips) Sssh! Yes, she's here.
10 of 40
PAPILLON: What about that time sheet?
Here it is, sir.
11 of 40
BOTARD: Pfff!
So you see, I'm not mad after all.
12 of 40
BOTARD: He doesn't even know how many he saw. I don't think you know what you're talking about.
It was a unicorned rhinoceros.
13 of 40
BOTARD: I don't mean to be offensive. But I don't believe a word of it. No rhinoceros has ever been seen in this country.
There's a first time for everything.
14 of 40
BOTARD: Your rhinoceros is a myth!
A myth?
15 of 40
DUDARD: But nevertheless a cat was trampled to death - that you can't deny.
Well I believe flying saucers exist!
16 of 40
DUDARD: Real!
Very real!
17 of 40
PAPILLON: ...And Miss Daisy, you bring the letters to my office for signature. Hurry up and get them typed.
Very good, Mrs Papillon.
18 of 40
PAPILLON: ...If this goes on I shall fire him. It's not the first time he's played me this trick -
Oh here's Mrs Boeuf. Morning, Mrs Boeuf!
19 of 40
PAPILLON: Give her a glass of water!
Yes, straightaway!
20 of 40
MRS BOEUF: ...It's down there, by the entrance. It seemed to want to come upstairs.
My God!
21 of 40
BERENGER: Keep calm!
Are you feeling better now, Mrs Boeuf?
22 of 40
DUDARD: Come and look. Come and have a look at your rhinoceros.
Oh look at the way it's going round and round. It looks as if it was in pain...what can it want?
23 of 40
DUDARD: I sent a report a week ago, Boss.
Poor thing, it keeps on trumpeting and going round and round. What does it want? Oh it's looking at us! Here kitty, kitty...
24 of 40
PAPILLON: In any case, it's out of reach.
Poor thing!
25 of 40
PAPILLON: We're in a fine mess with no staircase. It's all the management's fault.
Maybe. But how are we going to get down?
26 of 40
MRS BOEUF: It's my husband. Oh Boeuf, my poor Boeuf, what's happened to you?
Are you positive?
27 of 40
BOTARD: I understand it all now..
How can you collect insurance in a case like this?
28 of 40
BERENGER: Oh!
Carry her over there!
29 of 40
MRS BOEUF: Ah! Oh!
Maybe it can all be put right...
30 of 40
MRS BOEUF: My poor darling. I can't leave him like that, my poor darling. He's calling me. He's calling me.
Feeling better now, Mrs Boeuf?
31 of 40
PAPILLON: Work's going to be delayed again. What about the post, Miss Daisy?
I want to know first how we're going to get out of here.
32 of 40
PAPILLON: It is a problem. Through the window.
It's too high.
33 of 40
BERENGER: They're out of sight.
(entering) I had trouble getting the firemen.
34 of 40
PAPILLON: Are there fires all over the place, then?
No, there aren't any fires, the firemen have been called out for other rhinoceroses.
35 of 40
BERENGER: For other rhinoceroses?
Yes, other rhinoceroses. They've been reported all over town. This morning there were seven, now there are seventeen.
36 of 40
BOTARD: What did I tell you?
As many as thirty-two have been reported. They're not official yet, but they're bound to be confirmed soon.
37 of 40
PAPILLON: What about the work?
That's the firemen!
38 of 40
BOTARD: There're going to be some big changes made; they won't get away with it as easily as that.
Up here, firemen!
39 of 40
DUDARD: Goodbye, Miss Daisy. See you soon.
See you soon, goodbye!
