Savage-Rumbaugh et al (1986)

?
What was the aim of the study?
To see how non-humans aquire knowledge of symbols without training and to also compare pygmy chimps with common chimps
1 of 11
Who were the subjects?
Pygmy chimps: Kanzai and Mulika Common chimps: Austin and Sherman
2 of 11
Why did this study become a Quasi-experiment?
It became a quasi experiment because species can not be controlled
3 of 11
Two advantages of the Case Study method?
It allows this study to have more in-depth data because this study was carried out for 17 months over a 10 year span. Case studys such as this also help the experimenters to produce a novel hypothesis which can be used for later testing
4 of 11
Two disadvantages of the Case Study method?
The data collected cannot be generalised to other pygmy chimps because Kanzai and Mulika were in their natural environment meaning information may not be relevent or useful. Also, it is difficult to draw a definate cause and effect from case studies.
5 of 11
What is a Longitudinal design?
This is observational research that studies the same group of individuals over an extended period of time. However, they are time consuming and expensive.
6 of 11
Name the 3 procedures used
General, Fruit Test and Formal Tests
7 of 11
What criteria had to be met before a word was included in a chimp's vocab?
Kanzai had to spontaneously say a word 9 out of 10 times correctly for it to be put into the chimp's vocab. For example, 'orange'. This was monitored by a group of researchers.
8 of 11
What type of data was collected?
How many times Kanzai and Mulika matched the lexigram to English which was 67/68 times, matched the photo to English (60/61), matched photo to lexigram (60/61) and matched lexigram to synthesised speech (54/58).
9 of 11
How was reliability achieved?
Reliability was achieved because it was only recorded if Kanzai said a word 9/10 times spontanously or imitated. The results were recorded by a computer and the experimenters worked as group recording only concordance.
10 of 11
2 points as to why the sample was not representative?
The sample size was small and the species varied due to individual differences
