a pygmy chimpanzee, Kanzi, born - 28/10/80 in captivity, assigned to the language research center - 6 months, observed using symbols spontaneously - 2 and a half, without training identified symbols correctly did not confuse them

kanzi used a battery powered keyboard with geometric symbols that lit up when touched, speech synthesiser spoke the word, used a laminated copy outside

55 acres of forest, specific foods stored at 17 different locations, has to travel to get the food he preferred

a record of Kanzi's language development for 17 months from when he was 2 and a half yrs old, two types of record kept - automatic computerised record on his keyboard, notes from observers when outside

symbol use recorded - correct, incorrect, spontaneous, imitation, structured. record kept of whether his behaviour matched his symbolic utterance

video camera used to film Kanzi's symbol use outside, film analysed and compared with findings from notes

what were the findings of the experiment?
2,530 correct combinations of symbols, 265 instances of imitating symbols, the ordering of symbol gesture, symbol indicated that Kanzi was using correct English syntax and understood the order of the symbol changed the meaning of communication

Kanzi learned that how we order the words in a sentence changes the meaning
