symbol use recorded - correct, incorrect, spontaneous, imitation, structured. record kept of whether his behaviour matched his symbolic utterance

video camera used to film Kanzi's symbol use outside, film analysed and compared with findings from notes

2,530 correct combinations of symbols, 265 instances of imitating symbols, the ordering of symbol gesture, symbol indicated that Kanzi was using correct English syntax and understood the order of the symbol changed the meaning of communication
