Causes of water pollution?
Machopocho river is heavily contaminated by sewage and chemicals, industry. Low levels of sewage treated (15%).

What are the impacts of water pollution?
Heavy metals cause cancer and brain development problems. Decrease in local biodiversity. Decrease in fish, fisheries go out of business downstream e.g. San Antonio, £300 mil cleanup.

Causes of traffic congestion?
Economic development means de-centralisation and urban sprawl. Deteriorated public transport system, bus fell by 18%, whilst car journeys increased by 20%.

Impacts of traffic congestion?
Longer journeys, therefore increased numbers of cars and increased levels of pollutants entering the atmosphere.

Causes of atmospheric pollution?
Increase in population (1.5 m in 1960 - 5.5 m in 2005), and economic boom, increasing levels of traffic.

Poorer health of local people, pollution levels exceed those set by the world health organisation.

2000- 2010 urban transport plan set by government ($700m to improve road network, 15 new busways, expansion of metro system which holds 2,000,000 people a day, increase in rail length from 31 - 105km)
