Sampling
Only some of the population are studied, known as a sample. A representative sample is important, able to generalise the results.
1 of 9
Sample frame
Starts with a sampling frame - list all members of the target population. From this list, participants are picked.
2 of 9
Random Sample
Representative. Each member of the target population has the same chance of being picked, e.g. computer generated.
3 of 9
Stratified Sample
Representative. Population is divided up and each section is sampled - correct proportions. Includes relevant information about the populations characteristics.
4 of 9
Quota Sample
Representative. Doesn't require a sample frame. Researcher calculates how many people from each group are required, match characteristics until the quota is full. e.g. 20 males under age 30.
5 of 9
Systematic Sample
Representative. Systematic approach e.g. every 10th name in a list. Not equal chance of being picked.
6 of 9
Snowball Sample
Non representative. Start with one person (gatekeeper), which introduces the researcher to another person and so on.
7 of 9
Volunteer Sampling
Non representative. Invite people to volunteer for the research. Only people who have an interest will come forward.
8 of 9
Opportunity Sampling
Non representative. Those who are readily available and willing to take part, who are suitable for the research.
