Dacie starts to realise that how much he and Alec have drifted apart and this is the first time he has admitted it.

Alec emphasises how Davie struggles to cope and cant even cook for himself or Alec, Davie is unable to take on the roles of the mother, Davie is trying his best to help Alec, but Alec doesnt appreciate it.

Davie realises that when Alec goes to further his education, that will be the final breakdown of their relationship.

Davie busies himself to avoid his emotions, he has a lot of grief that he wont confront from the death of his wife.

This highlights how close Alec and Davie's relationship was, it shows now that Davie has broken the promise of fixing the yacht, this also conveys that Alec was proud of his dads employment and wants t how off about how proud he is.

"Oh ah'm hellava sorry. Ah didn't realise we had a gourment in the family".
This highlights the sarcastic tone and attitude of Davie and is fed up with Alec critisising him.

Alec is clearly been worrying about his dad's whereabouts, but Davie is dismisive, It is almost as if they have swapped roles, with Alec being mature and responsible than his dad.

"Was a good night. Good company. Know what ah mean? Nae harm in it. Coupla halfs. Nice (noticing Alec) Yawright son? Alec: (not looking up) Aye".
The stage direction "not looking up" suggests that Alec isanry about Davie's behaviour, and acts as though he doesn't care any more about his relationship with his dad.

"Did ye gamble wi that bursary money?".
Alec asks this when Davie returns from the pub. This clearly shows that Alec feels that Davie has detrayed his trust, this is a clear turning point in the relationship as Alec then goes on to seek a means of escape from his dad. He cant be trusted.

"(picks up yacht) That just leaves it".
The yacht has been a link between father and son and provided Alec with a sense of hope that everything could be fixed between them, burning the yacht shows that their relationship has been destroyed and there is no hope left. Alec moves on.
