The first consideration of the court is the welfare of any child of the family [note the difference between this and the Children Act definition where welfare is paramount.]

the ascertainable wishes and feelings of the child concerned (considered in the light of his age and understanding)

his age, sex, background and any characteristics of his which the court considers relevant.
