Population
A collection of individual people or items

Finite Population
Each individual can be given a number

Infinite Population
Each individual cannot be given a number -there are too many

Census
An investigation in which information is obtained from all members of a population

Sample
A sub-set of the population

Sampling Units
Individual units of a population

Sampling Frame
A list of all sampling units

Simple Random Sample
Every possible sample of a certain size has an equal chance of being selected

Sample Survey
An investigation using a sample

Bias
Anything which occurs when taking a sample which prevents it from being truly representative of the whole population

Population Parameter
Any characteristic of a population which is measurable

A statistic
A quantity calculated solely from the observations in a sample (it doesn't involve any unknown parameters)

Sampling Distribution
Gives all the values of a statistic and the probability that each would happen by chance alone
