To supply the East idlands with more water - enough to cope with rapid population growth .

It boosts the local economy - its a popular tourist attraction because of wildlife and recreation facilities however , 6Km^2 flooded and some farmers lost their livelihoods.

What are the social impacts of the reservoir?
lots of recreational activities take place on and around it, many jobs have been created to build and maintain the reservoir however, 2 villages were demolished to make way for it.

Name some environmental impacts?
Rutland reservoir is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), hundreds of species of birds live around the reservoir. Ospreys have been reintroduced to central England by the Rutland Osprey Project.
