What was the most important reform by Alexander II ?
The emancipation of the serfs in 1861. But, serfs ended up having to pay for the land rather than get it for free, caused resentment.

At first their industry was behind other countries, but in 19th century it developed rapidly by the straits regime. led to a growth in w/c but they had poor living and working conditions.

many different nationalities within the empire eg Finland, Estonia etc, but there was resentment so a threat to the tsar.

'Great spurt' (rapid industrialisation). Led to a higher population, in Moscow pop increased by 25%

Alexander II was killed by a revolutionary group called 'peoples will'. led to opposition being dealt with harshly.

they started to re group in 1890's, 1897 RSDLP, 1902, Socialist revolutionary party

Autocracy - where one person in government has unlimited power, Nicholas was very committed to this idea and thought no one should challenge him

very ineffective, he was indecisive and didn't address big issues

Russian orthodox church, under state control, but became less valuable to the tsar as was becoming corrupt
