Islam is from a root word meaning peace, Allah commanded people to live in peace, justice and responsible brotherhood. The Qu'ran teaches seeking of reconcilliation not revenge.

It is sometimes necessary (Just War), Jesus said 'those who take up the sword, die by the sword'. Quakers believe that no violence should take place, loving enemies and praying for them is a greater victory.

The greater jihad is the struggle against temptation and disobedience to Allah, but the lesser Jihad - armed conflict should only be to bring peace and freedom. Ethically right wars.
