High altitude, fast moving westerly winds wjich often flow on an irregular path which changes throughout seasons

May be caused by presence of substantial mountain barriers e.g. Rockies

What direction does the wind take when it encounters a barrier?
The wind swings Northward and Upward around barriers then swings downward and southwards
