Rosenhan- Evaluation of Methodology

?
Reliability
:-) Variables kept consistent eg. Same words (thud, hollow, empty). Acted the same- normally (9th pps excluded cause he didn't tell truth).
1 of 5
Internal Validity
:-( Pseudopatients were not insane, so not true experience of those who were insane eg. 8 pps knew they would soon be released unlike real patients.
2 of 5
Sampling
:-) Staff from variety of hospitals so generalisations could be made. :-( Hospitals just in America so may be culturally biased in favour of western treatment methods.
3 of 5
Data
:-) Quantitative data- objective measure of experiences in a mental hospital so comparisons can be made eg. number of days before each pps was discharged (mean 19). Qualitative data- detailed view of experiences eg. the feeling of powerlessness
4 of 5
Ethics
:-( Deception eg. nurses thought 8 pps were real patients- did not give their informed consent. Harm eg. In study 2 genuine patients could have been mistreated if thought they were fake.
