He found that patients were labelled insane, and their behaviour was viewed as a reflection of that label. Mortification- stripped of identity so no power.

What did they do in the study 'Pygmalion'?
Self-fulfilling prophecies & labelling. Teachers were told that a 'special' group of pupils had 'unusual potential' and that they would 'bloom'. They showed greater increase in IQ over 8 months that control group- due to labelling.

1) To find out if psychiatrists could tell the difference between normal and abnormal people. 2) To investigate if the diagnosis is based on patient's behaviour or the environment they are in (labelling)- leading to self-fulfilling prophecy.
