He was part of the anti-psychiatry movement and often gave lectures about problems with mainstream psychiatry. Rosenhan listened to one of these lectures, inspiring him to observe, the process by which mental patients are labled& stripped of identity

(1961) Worked in a mental asylum as a member of staff in order to carry out participant observation of what it is like to be institutionalised.

What did Goffman find?
He found that patients were labelled insane, and their behaviour was viewed as a reflection of that label. Mortification- stripped of identity so no power.

What did they do in the study 'Pygmalion'?
Self-fulfilling prophecies & labelling. Teachers were told that a 'special' group of pupils had 'unusual potential' and that they would 'bloom'. They showed greater increase in IQ over 8 months that control group- due to labelling.

What were Rosenhan's aims?
1) To find out if psychiatrists could tell the difference between normal and abnormal people. 2) To investigate if the diagnosis is based on patient's behaviour or the environment they are in (labelling)- leading to self-fulfilling prophecy.
