Rutter's ERA study procedure
Followed 165 Romanian orphans adopted in Britain to test if good care could make up for poor experiences in institutions. Physical, cognitive and emotional development assessed at 4, 6, 11 and 15. Control group of 52 British children adopted

Rutter's ERA study findings
When arrived in UK, half showed signs of delayed intellectual development. At 11 showed different rates of recovery based on age of adoption. Mean IQ adopted before 6 months was 102, betwen 6 months and 2 years was 86, after 2 years was 77

Bucharest Early Intervention project procedure
Zeanah et al. assessed attachment using strange situation in 95 children between 12-31 months old who spent 90% on average of their life in institutes. Control group of 50 children never lived in insititute
3 of 9
Bucharest Early Intervention project findings
74% control group were secure, 19% of institute group were secure, and 65% had disorganised attachment. 44% disinhibited, 20% control disinhibited
4 of 9
Effects of institutionalisation - disinhibited attachment
Equally friendly to strangers and people they know - Rutter described as adaptation to living with multiple caregivers during sensitive period
5 of 9
Effects of institutionalisation - mental retardation
Damage to intellectual development can be recovered as long as adoption takes place before 6 months old
6 of 9
Evaluation - real-life application
Studying Romanian orphans led to improvements in childrens care in institutions, for example children have a key worker rather than multiple caregivers
7 of 9
Evaluation - fewer extraneous variables than other orphan studies
No confounding variables such as experiencing loss or trauma before being institutionalised. This means increased internal validity
8 of 9
Evaluation - the Romanian orphanages were not typical
It is possible conditions were so bad that results cannot be applied to understanding impact of better care where children experience deprivation. This is a limitation as unusual situational variables mean it lacks generalisability
