What are rocks made of?
Rocks are made of grains that fit together. Each grain in the rock is made from a mineral, which is a chemical compound.
1 of 19
What are the different types of grains with example?
Interlocking Grains - Granite Rounded Grains - Sandstone
2 of 19
What are rocks that can absorb water called?
Porous Rocks and they are usually rounded grains
3 of 19
Name the three main types of rocks?
Sedimentery, Igneous and Metamorphic
4 of 19
What is the order of processes of the formation of a sedimentery rock?
sedimentation → compaction → cementation
5 of 19
Describe a sedimentery rock?
They contain rouunded grains such as mud and sand. They have layers and sometimes fossils can be trapped within.
6 of 19
In a sedimentery rock where are the oldest layers?
The oldest layers are at the bottom. (newest at the top)
7 of 19
Describe a metamoprhic rock?
They have been morphed from a different type of rock. Contain thin layers. Very hard and rarely have fossils.
8 of 19
What types of rocks can metamorphic rocks be before they have changed?
Igneous or sedimentery
9 of 19
What 2 conditions are needed to form a metamorphic rock?
Heat and Pressure
10 of 19
What causes rocks to become heated?
Magma
11 of 19
Marble is formed from what rock?
Limestone
12 of 19
Why do you think metamorphic rock is harder?
It has been heated and pressurized
13 of 19
Why on't you often find fossils in metamorphic rocks?
The heat has melted them
14 of 19
Describe an igneous rock?
Contains randomly interlocking crystals which can vary in size. Do not contain fossils and are formed when the magma solidfies.
15 of 19
What are the 2 types of igneous rock?
Intrusive and Extrusive
16 of 19
What is the defintion of intrusive and extrusive?
Intrusive- Have large crystals because they have cooled slowly Extrusive - Have small crystlas because they have cooled quickly
17 of 19
What igneous rock has been cooled on the surface of the earth?
Extrusive
18 of 19
Give an example of each rock?
Sedimentery- Limestone/sandstone Metamorphic - Slate/Marble Igneous - Pumice/granite
