Rocks

?
Igneous rock
A type of rock formed by the cooling of magma
1 of 15
Sedimentary rock
A type of rock formed by the deposition of materials compacted to make layers of rock . for example, fossils
2 of 15
Metamorphic rock
A type of rock formed when other rocks are heated and put under pressure, rock are then chemically changed to form metamorphic rock
3 of 15
Weathering
Where rock start to wear away, there are diffrent types of weathering
4 of 15
Mechanical Weathering
When rocks are brokn into smaller pieces by a physical process. it is most likely to hapeen when a rock has nothing to protect it.
5 of 15
Chemical Weathering
Erosion of rocks caused by a chemical reaction. For example likmestone and chalk because they are made out of minerals (calcium carbonate) so when acidic rainwater falls it starts to dissolve by this weathing process.
6 of 15
Biological Weathering
Weathering cause by animals and plants. For example rabbits burrowing into cracked rocks can make the rock bigger.
7 of 15
Freeze-Thaw Weathering
When water goes into the cracks of rocks and the water freezes. Eventually the rock cracks will get that big that rock pieces will fall off.
8 of 15
Exfoliation
Happens when its hoy during the day so the rock will expand. At night when it is colder the rocks will cool and contract over time this will lead to small pieces of rock falling off (onion skin)
9 of 15
Solution
When soluble particles are dissolved into water. For example rivers
10 of 15
Carbonation
Limestone is made out of calcium carbonate, when carbon dioxide and rain meet, the carbon dioxide dissolves , this creates a weak acid called corbonic acid. when this acid comes into contact with limestone it reacts to form calcium carbonate.
11 of 15
Batholith
A large body of instructive igneous rock.
12 of 15
Joints
Virtical cracks in rocks
13 of 15
Imermeable rocks
rock that does not allow water to pass through it. for example clay
14 of 15
permeable rock
rock that does allow water to pass through it. for example limestone, chalk and sandstone
