The Hydrological Cycle step ONE.
Water evaporates from the sea and the land - evaporation is when water is heated by the sun and turns into water vapour. Transpiration is the evaporation of water from plants. Evapotranspiration is both evaporation and transpiration happening.
1 of 16
The Hydrological Cycle step TWO.
Water vapour moves inland by winds
2 of 16
The Hydrological Cycle step THREE.
The water vapour condenses to clouds and then falls over the land as precipitation.
3 of 16
The Hydrological Cycle step FOUR.
Water moves from one place to another in many ways (called flows or transfers):
4 of 16
Infiltration
Infiltration is when water soaks into the soil.
5 of 16
Percolation
Percolation is when water moves vertically down through soil and rock.
6 of 16
Throughflow
Throughflow is when water in the soil flows down hill.
7 of 16
Groundwater flow
Groundwater flow is when water in rock flows downhill.
8 of 16
Surface runoff
Surface runoff is when water flows overground.
9 of 16
Channel flow
Channel flow is the flow of water in a river.
10 of 16
The hydological cycle step FIVE.
Water can be held on the land in stores:
11 of 16
Channel storage
Channel storage is when water is held in a river.
12 of 16
Groundwater storage
Groundwater storage is when water is stored underground in soil and rock.
13 of 16
Interception storage
Interception storage is when water land on things like plant leaves and doesn't hit the ground.
14 of 16
Surface storage
Surface storage is when water is held in things like lakes, reservoirs and puddles.
15 of 16
The hydrological cylce step SIX.
The water eventually ends up in the sea, where it evaporates and goes round the cycle again.
