Why do rivers flood
Vegetation being cut down.
1 of 26
Why do rivers flood
Lots of rain fall over a short space of time.
2 of 26
Why do rivers flood
The ground around the river being impermeable.
3 of 26
What is a meander
A pat of a river that is curved
4 of 26
How is a meander formed
The waters energy erodes the bank creating a wider bank but the water then deposites the mud on the other side which is slower and a meander is formed.
5 of 26
What is solution
The water dissolves minerals from the bed and banks. That helps to break them up. .
6 of 26
What is hydraulic action
In a fast flowing river water is forced into cracks in the bank. Overtime this breaks the bank up.
7 of 26
What is abrasion
Rocks, stones and sand in the water act as sand paper. They scrape in the river river bed and banks and wear them away
8 of 26
What is attrition
Rocks and stones bang together and knock bits off of each other.
9 of 26
Why do rivers look dirty
Small particles of rock and soil are carried along as a suspension. They make water look cloudy and muddy.
10 of 26
Why are there small specs of mud in the water.
Dissolved materials are carried along the river as a solution. You can't see them..
11 of 26
What is a bedload
The heavier material is carried along the bottom. The larger stones and rolled along the river bed and sand and small stones bounce along
12 of 26
What is deposition
This is a process where the materials that are being carried are dropped. This happens because the river looses energy and can't hold the stones any more.
13 of 26
What is deposited first
The bigger heavier stones are deposited first, then the pebbles and then the smaller stones. At the very end the smaller particles are dropped.
14 of 26
Does the dissolved particles get deposited
No it stays in the water until the sea.
15 of 26
What is erosion
Where the water wears away the river bed and the river banks.
16 of 26
What is transportation
Where the bed load and the eroded materials are carried up stream.
17 of 26
What is a V-shaped valley
A v-shaped valley is a valley that has a river write a the bottom.if you looked at the valley straight on it looks like a V.
18 of 26
How is a V-shaped valley formed
A v-shaped valley is formed by the water eroding the bank into a V
19 of 26
What is a water shed
The area of high land forming the edge of a river basin.
20 of 26
What is a source
Where the river starts
21 of 26
What is a mouth
Where a river meets the sea
22 of 26
What is a confluence
The point where 2 or more rivers meet
23 of 26
What is a tributary
A small river or stream that joins a larger river or stream
24 of 26
What is a channel
Where the river flows
25 of 26
What is a drainage basin
It's the area of land drained by the river and its tribrutaries.
