EROSION
1 of 15
What is hydraulic action?
When the power of running water undercuts the banks and erodes the bed.
2 of 15
What is abrasion/corrasion?
Rocks and pebbles are carried by the river crash against the sides and bed of the river, scraping away material.
3 of 15
What is attrition?
Rocks and pebbles carried by the river bang into each other and break up into smaller pieces.
4 of 15
What is solution/corrosion?
Some minerals from rocks are dissolved and carried away by the river e.g calcium carbonate.

6 of 15
What is traction?
Boulders and rocks are dragged or rolled along the river bed.
7 of 15
What is saltation?
Smaller-sized particles, such as pebbles or sand, are bounced along the bed.
8 of 15
What does suspension mean?
Fine particles of silt or clay are held in water.
9 of 15
What is solution?
Minerals are dissolved in river water.

11 of 15
What happens in abrasion or corrasion?
The sea hurls pebbles and sand against the base of the cliff, chipping and grinding it down.
12 of 15
What happens in hydraulic action?
Powerful waves lash the cliffs, forcing air into tinycracks. The prossure of the compressed air weakens the rock and forces it to break up.
13 of 15
What happens in corrosion?
The sea water reacts with chemicals and minerals in some rocks and they become dissolved.
14 of 15
What happens in attrition?
The rocks and stones which the sea erodes from the cliffs are rounded and broken as they bump against each other and they are thrown against the cliff.
