What is the course like near the the mouth of the river?
Almost flat

The long profile shows what?
Shows how the gradient changes.
5 of 14
What do rivers form as they flow downhill?
They form channels and valleys.
6 of 14
What do rivers do?
Erode the landscape and transport eroded material to somewhere further along the course where it is deposited.
7 of 14
What does the shape of the valley and channel do the further you go down the river?
The shape of the valley changes. It depends on whether erosion or deposition is the dominant process.
8 of 14
What does cross profile show?
Cross profile shows what the cross section of the river looks like.
9 of 14
What does the valley/channel look like at the upper course?
V-shaped valley, steep sides. Narrow, shallow channel.
10 of 14
What does the valley/channel look like at the middle course?
Gently sloping valley sides. Wider, deeper channel.
11 of 14
What does the valley/channel look like at the lower course?
Very wide, almost flat valley. Very wide and deep channel.
12 of 14
What is vertical erosion?
Erosion which deepens the valley and channel (making it V-shaped). It's dominant in the upper course of the river. High turbulence causes rough, angular particles to be scraped along the river bed.
13 of 14
What is lateral erosion?
This widens the river valley and channel during the formation of meanders. It is dominant at the middle and lower course.
