The start of a river, usually on a mountain, hill or ridge.

Tributary
A river which joins a larger river e.g. R.Roding is a tributary of R.Thames.

Confluence
The point at which 2 or 3 rivers meet.

Drainage Basin/Catchment area
The area drained by a main river and its tributaries. e.g. Amazon drainage basin.

Water shed
A ridge of high land separating two drainage basins.

Estuary
The tidal part of the river as it flows towards the sea.

Mouth
The point at which the river reaches the sea.
