He showed great power over Poitou the most northernly and tightly controlled part of Aquitaine. It was unlike England and Normandy as it did not have a developed central government.

His principal issue was he pride and arrogance, his position as papal legate whilst only being bishop of Ely, seemed to insult the English church. H was made to resign in September 1191.

He acted to supervise roll castles and shrievalties. In addition although members of the kings council such as William Marshall were confirmed as sheriffs many new ones were closely associated with Longchamp.
