Pulse
The beat in piece of music.

Simple Time
Musical rhythm or metre in which each beat in a bar may be subdivided simply into halves or quarters.

Compound Time
Each note is divided into 3 equal parts like in 6/8, 9/8 or 12/8.

Regular Rhythms
Made up of regular groupings and beats and is easy to follow the beat.

Irregular Rhythms
Rhythms that do not fit into the usual rhythmic patterns of duple, triple or quadruple times.

Free Rhythms
Music with no definite metre or pulse.

Augmentation
Where a melody or series of notes is repeated using notes of a longer duration.

Diminution
The notes lengths of the original melody are shortened when it is played again.

Hemiola
A rhythm which has a 3 against 2 metrical feel.

Cross Rhythms
When two different rhythms are played at the same time and usually contrast in some way.

When dotted note values are used followed by shorter clipped notes.

When a single note value is divided into 3 notes.

When a notes that occurs at a usually unimportant moment in the rhythm becomes stressed.

The speed of the underlying beat.

Unwritten tempo changes.

Polyrhythm
When two or more rhythms are played at the same time.

Bi-Rhythm
A specific type of polyrhythm consisting of two independent rhythms played simultaneously.
